Each year we celebrate the life and works of the late Huntly Writers’ poet, Brian Nisbet, with the Brian Nisbet Poetry Award.
2024 is the ninth year of this award.
Entries are now welcomed until the closing date of October 4th 2024.
Prizes will be given for the best poems on the theme of ‘THE LIFE AND MULTIFACETED WORKS OF GEORGE MACDONALD’. December 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of George MacDonald, a Huntly-born writer known as the Father of Fantasy writing. Your poem could be inspired by his life, his childhood in Huntly, or his many works of fiction and fantasy.
Rules:
Poems should be between 4 and 40 lines long
Poems can be in Doric, Scots, English or a blend of all
There are three age categories
– Up to and including 12 years
– age 13 to 17 years
– 18 years and over
Entered poems should not have been previously published. This includes online in any form (including personal websites and social media) or in print (books, magazines etc.).
Submission guidelines:
– Entries must be submitted, with name, age category, and contact information attached separately, by mid-day on FRIDAY OCT 4th.
– If you are sending by email you should put your poem title, name, age category and contact information in the body of the email. Poems sent by email should be attached in a Word document with the title of your poem as the saved name of the document. Please do not put your name and contact details on the poem itself. Printed or handwritten poems can be submitted to Orbs Community Bookshop, 10½, The Square, Huntly, AB54 8BR. Please enclose a separate sheet of paper with your poem title, name, age category and contact information. Please do not put your contact details on the poem itself.
– Only one entry is allowed per person.
– Entry is free.
– By entering, you agree to the publication of your entry online and/or in print. Poets maintain copyright of their works.
Closing date is October 4th 2024 and winners will be announced in December 2024.
